Sir,

With reference to the letter from this office of the 28th of March, 1887, Mauritius relative to the sale of the old Military Hospital in Port Louis, Mauritius, I am directed by Lord Knutsford to state, for the information of the Secretary of State for War, that his Lordship has had before him the report (Section 5) of the Committee on Colonial Military Contributions, to whose consideration this question was referred, and that he now proposes, with the concurrence of Mr. Secretary Stanhope, to address the despatch, of which a draft is enclosed, to the Governor of Mauritius on the subject.

I am to add that his Lordship concurs generally in the proposals of the Committee on the general question of the disposal of Colonial military lands and buildings.

With reference to your despatch, No. 374, of the 26th of September, 1886, relative to the claim of the Mauritius Government to the property formerly used as a Military Hospital in Port Louis, I have the honour to inform you that, in order that the question might be thoroughly investigated, it was referred for the consideration of the Inter-Departmental Committee, appointed to deal with the general question of the contribution of the Colonies towards their defence.

I now enclose a copy of the recommendation submitted by the Committee on the subject after full and careful consideration, and since the arrangement they recommended appears to me to be an equitable one, I trust that it will be accepted by your Government.
